APPLYING GODS LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING TO EVERYDAY LIFE

VERSE OF THE DAY

1 John 4:19 (NKJV)

19 We love Him because He first loved us.

In Psalm 139 on Monday we learned how much God  knows us and loves us.  It would stand to reason that if God loves us so very much that we should be more than willing to love Him in return.  Our human mind tells us this is natural to love someone who loves you.  While this appears logical it does not work that way all too often.

In school I was quite popular.  I really was.  This was not a good popular.  I was the popular one to pick on and make fun of.  Everyone in school tormented and made fun of me.  I know, sad but true.  Only to make my point clear I will tell you what my pastor told my daughter one day.  He said, “I do not know how your mother managed to come to school every day because we were so mean to her.  I would have changed schools or ran awy.”

Now I tell you this to finish my original point.  You see I did not run away or change schools.  We were very poor and there just was not another school.  i wanted friends and like every teenage girl I also wanted a boyfriend.  I believed firmly that if I loved someone enough that they had to love me back and so that is exactly what I set out to do.  For 6 years I absolutely loved a certain boy in school.  I did not mind telling him so either.  Of course he was the most popular and that meant he could not possibly return my affection even if he wanted to because of how the other kids would have ridiculed him.  Nothing detoured me from my love for him though even when he joined the others in the ridicule of me.  I continued to let him know of my feelings for 6 years until I finally left school in my senior year.  I was sure that if I loved him he would eventually love me in return.

That is what God has done.  He loves us so much no matter what we do to Him.  He continues to love us and His hope is that we will eventually love Him in return.  That is why he sent His Son to die for us.  He created each and every person on earth so He could pour out His love on them in hopes that thye would love Him in return.

There is not a “happy” ending to my story.  I moved away and the boy in question moved away and I have not seen him since my last day at school almost 28 years ago.  I did hear from his best friend that he is not the same as he used to be.  I will also add that all those kids that I went to school with have changed their attitude now and treat me quite well.  Some of them even truly love me as a sister in Christ.  I never gave up hope that eventually this would happen.  I did finally give up hope on my “true love”.

God is the same way.  He never gives up hope that we will turn from our wicked ways and allow Him to bestow all of His wonderful blessings and love on us.  See if this young man would have let me I would have done anything in the whole world for him.  All he had to do was to accept the love I offered him.  That is exactly what God is saying to us.

God says, “Accept the love I have for you and love Me in return.”

So will you allow God to love you and love Him in return?  Or will you be like this young man and join the others in their ridicule of God?

Either way God is waiting.  Unlike me He does not give up hope.

PSALM 139:14  I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.
