THE DAMASCUS ROAD EXPERIENCE (LIKE PAUL WE ALL HAVE ONE)
In the book of Acts we find Paul who was then Saul. He had just gotten permission from his superiors to go all the way to Damascus which was 136 miles. They were given the authority to go there and bring back all the Christians that were there and they were to use force if need be. Now I really want to make a couple of important points right here that are easily overlooked.
- Paul asked for permission to do this. He was not asked to go he begged to be allowed to go.
- 136 miles That is a mighty long way to go for a few Christians so Saul was definitely serious about his belief that they were wrong. I wonder weren’t there any Christians any closer. 136 miles WOW
- Not to mention that they were WALKING. Can you believe that they were walking there and back to get some Christians.
Acts 9:1-2 (NKJV) 1 Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
There is no way that I would ever walk 136 miles just to get…. Wellll maybe I should not say that so quickly. I remember many days that I walked 20-30 miles during the day just to get some “crack”. I suppose it would depend on how determined you are to get what you want. I would say that Saul was determined and he believed he was right. Saul was zealous for his belief. I was zealous for my “crack”. What are you zealous for? Well obviously Saul and I were wrong. So what happens when we are wrong? What does God do when we are zealous for the wrong thing?
We will go into more of the Damascus Road and Saul and Paul and me and you in the morning. This is so good of a study that you just do not want to miss it. I am so excited about this one. You may even want to get the RSS feed so you do not miss any of this. I promise it will make you think about where you are with God and where God wants you. Saul had to. So did I.
Acts 9:3 (NKJV) 3 As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven.
